I spent 38 years in industrial construction and witnessed two crane failures, a lot of people went down the road kicking their lunch pails. Fortunately there were no injuries in either incident. The first was in 1999 where a 80 ft. boom failed and crushed a pickup truck, luckily it happened at about 12:15 lunchtime. For a lark the owner of the truck reached in and started the truck. The second we were constructing a concrete permit center in a oil refinery, a cherry picker ” small mobile crane” was being used to hoist rebar ” concrete reinforcing steel” onto the roof of the structure. In order to get it as close as possible to it’s final destination which was just out of boom reach workers pulled the load further causing the crane to tip and fall onto the structure. The operator just grabbed his lunch kit and walked away knowing he was done.
