Fascinating. I wonder how these oil rigs developed. Who designed their first and how did they decide what to include, how much space to allocate for each function, etc. It has to be a lot of learning and trial and error. Like a ship, they need to be self-sufficient and ready to deal with a wide variety of problems and situations. Take food for example, how many chefs are needed for a team of about 200 people? How much food should be prepared for each meal? How much storage space for that food… 2 weeks? 2 months? etc. Then replicate this type of planning for dozens of other jobs and functions. It must have taken a team of architects and engineers years to figure all this out.
