Bishop who asked Trump to ‘have mercy’

Posted on February 28, 2025February 28, 2025 By Christine Hodges

Right Reverend Mariann Edgar Budde, Bishop of Washington, recently issued a message to those who supported her after her public criticism of Donald Trump’s policies.

Following Trump’s controversial executive orders, including one stating there are “only two genders” and blocking migrants, Bishop Budde called for mercy during a January 21 service at Washington National Cathedral, where Trump was present. Her plea emphasized the fear faced by LGBTQ+ youth and undocumented immigrants.

In response, Trump dismissed the service as “not too exciting” and suggested they could have done better. Bishop Budde later responded, emphasizing the importance of reminding people of their humanity and their place in the wider community.

On February 25, Bishop Budde returned to social media to thank her supporters. In a video posted to Instagram, she expressed her gratitude for the messages of encouragement and reminded everyone of the spirit of love and goodness that unites them. She encouraged people to stand together, support one another, and remain brave in the face of adversity.
